Σερφάροντας στο δίκτυο, αναζητώντας κάτι αισιόδοξο για τη νέα χρονιά συνάντησα κάτι το οποίο με έκανε να σταματήσω. Δεν ήξερα αν πρέπει να χαμογελάσω ή να θυμώσω. Απροσδόκητο αλήθεια! Σκέφτηκα πως ίσως είναι από αφέλεια, από κακό χιούμορ. Τελικά μάλλον είναι από άγνοια χρήσης του διαδικτύου....Καλό είναι λοιπόν πριν δηλώσουμε "δάσκαλοι" στο διαδίκτυο και πριν δηλώσουμε τα σχολείο που υπηρετούμε και την τάξη που έχουμε, να εξερευνήσουμε τον τόπο που θα "εκτεθούμε" πολλές φορές. Να ρωτήσουμε, να δοκιμάσουμε, δεν είναι κακό να μη γνωρίζει κανείς κάτι...
Ο κίνδυνος διασυρμού είναι πολύ μεγάλος από ότι φαίνεται και στο screenshot. Δε γνωρίζω το συνάδελφο, όμως με αυτά που δηλώνει στο yfrog μάλλον δάσκαλος είναι... Ας προσέχουμε λοιπόν....

Digital Dialects is a website that has review materials and games for over 60 languages. This site includes both basic vocabulary along with spelling, verbs, and other concepts for the languages. It utilizes audio, text, images, and game to help children to learn another language. This site would be better used with a parent and child together or by an upper-elementary aged child. It is not as user friendly as other sites, but definitely provides more in depth information.

Learning Games for Kids has simple games for young children to play to learn the basic words in a foreign language including Spanish, German, French, and even Latin idioms commonly used today. Many of the games involve matching the word in English to the foreign language. This site mostly uses vocabulary that is combined with conjunctions: of, with, and the. These are important words to help connect vocabulary and verbs which are covered in the other links above.

Rosetta Stone Homeschool, a fee based program, is one of the most popular programs for learning a second language. They have taken their popular methods for teaching adults a foreign language quickly and adapted it for K-5 students to be used in the homeschool environment. The CAD project was initiated in the early 1920s, not long after James Henry Breasted founded the Oriental Institute in 1919, and barely one hundred years after the decipherment of the cuneiform script. This initial decipherment, and the soon-to-follow achievements in understanding the languages in which the hundreds of thousands of clay tablets were inscribed, opened an unsuspected treasure-house for the study and appreciation of one of the world's oldest civilizations.

The Chicago Assyrian Dictionary was conceived to provide more than lexical information alone, more than a one-to-one equivalent between Akkadian and English words. By presenting each word in a meaningful context, usually with a full and idiomatic translation, it recreates the cultural milieu and thus in many ways assumes the function of an encyclopedia. Its source material ranges in time from the third millennium b.c. to the first century a.d., and in geographic area from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Zagros Mountains in the east.

With sixteen of the projected twenty-one volumes published and the remaining volumes in various stages of preparation, with close to two million file cards - a database which is continually updated and which is accessible to scholars and students who wish to consult it - the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary has become an invaluable source for the study of the civilizations of the ancient Near East, their political and cultural history, their achievements in the sciences of medicine, astronomy, mathematics, and linguistics, and not least the timeless beauty of their poetry.

Εννέα δεκαετίες χρειάστηκαν οι επιστήμονες για να ολοκληρώσουν τους 21 τόμους του πρώτου πλήρους λεξικού που περιλαμβάνει τις γλώσσες της αρχαίας Μεσοποταμίας και των Ασυρριακών και Βαβυλωνιακών διαλέκτων, οι οποίες έχουν σταματήσει να ομιλούνται εδώ και 2.000 χρόνια. Αν και οι τόμοι του λεξικού έχουν τσουχτερή τιμή, ολόκληρο το έργο είναι διαθέσιμο δωρεάν online στη διεύθυνση http://oi.uchicago.edu/research/pubs/catalog/cad/.

Όλοι έχουν πλέον τη δυνατότητα να μελετήσουν τη γλώσσα που μιλούσε ο Ακκάδιος βασιλιάς Σαργών ο Μέγας τον 24ο αιώνα π.Χ., ή αυτήν του Χαμουραμπί το 1700 π.Χ. που συνέταξε τον πρώτο γνωστό κώδικα νόμων. Στη γλώσσα της αρχαίας Μεσοποταμίας γράφτηκε και το θρυλικό Έπος του Γιλγαμές, το πρώτο αριστούργημα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας, ενώ τη γλώσσα αυτή χρησιμοποιούσε και ο Ναβουχοδονόσωρ Β', γνωστός μας για την κατασκευή των Κρεμαστών Κήπων της Βαβυλώνας.
Η αρχαία γλώσσα της Μεσοποταμίας -και οι ποικίλες σημιτικές παραλλαγές της- ήταν η γλώσσα των εμπόρων της εποχής, των πρώτων οργανωμένων γεωργών, αλλά και η γλώσσα αρχαίων ιατρικών-μαγικών, αστρολογικών-αστρονομικών και άλλων πρωτο-επιστημονικών Βαβυλωνιακών κειμένων.
Οι λέξεις που γέμισαν τις σελίδες 21 τόμων επιβίωσαν μέχρι σήμερα σε πήλινες πινακίδες και λίθινες επιγραφές, η αποκωδικοποίηση των οποίων άρχισε πριν από περίπου 200 χρόνια. Το λεξικό περιέχει περίπου 28.000 λέξεις, δίνοντας τις ποικίλες έννοιές τους κατά περίπτωση, και καλύπτει μια περίοδο κατά προσέγγιση από το 2500 π.Χ. έως το 100 μ.Χ.
Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, αυτό το σύστημα γραφής ήταν το πρώτο οπουδήποτε στον κόσμο και οι πόλεις-κράτη στις κοιλάδες των ποταμών Τίγρη και Ευφράτη (που ορίζουν την Μεσοποταμία), εκεί όπου σήμερα βρίσκεται το Ιράκ και τμήμα της Συρίας, θεωρούνται οι κοιτίδες τόσο της αστικής ζωής όσο και του πολιτισμού.
Το λεξικό -ο πρώτος τόμος του οποίου εκδόθηκε το 1956- μοιάζει πιο πολύ με εγκυκλοπαίδεια, παρά με ένα κοινό "γλωσσάρι", καθώς οι περισσότερες λέξεις έχουν πολλαπλές έννοιες και παράλληλα δίνεται αναλυτικά το ιστορικό πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο αναπτύχθηκαν και εξελίχθηκαν, με άφθονα παραδείγματα από την λογοτεχνία, την θρησκεία, το δίκαιο, το εμπόριο και την καθημερινή ζωή.
Για παράδειγμα, 17 ολόκληρες σελίδες είναι αφιερωμένες σε μια μόνο λέξη, «ούμου», που σημαίνει «μέρα». Δεν λείπουν επίσης, όπως είναι επόμενο για ένα έργο τέτοιου μεγέθους, οι αμφισβητήσεις από άλλους επιστήμονες για διάφορες πτυχές των ερμηνειών. Όλο το λεξικό κοστίζει 1.995 δολάρια και κάθε μεμονωμένος τόμος 45 έως 150 δολάρια, όμως οι ενδιαφερόμενοι μπορούν να το βρουν δωρεάν στο διαδίκτυο στη διεύθυνση http://oi.uchicago.edu/research/pubs/catalog/cad/.
Η ολοκλήρωση του μνημειώδους έργου οφείλεται σε ερευνητές του πανεπιστημίου του Σικάγο. Όπως δήλωσε ο Τζιλ Στάιν, διευθυντής του Ασιατικού Ινστιτούτου του πανεπιστημίου του Σικάγο, το λεξικό «θα αποτελέσει απαραίτητο εργαλείο έρευνας για οποιονδήποτε επιστήμονα θέλει να μελετήσει τα γραπτά αρχεία του πολιτισμού της Μεσοποταμίας», που βρίσκονται σε σφηνοειδή γραφή, η οποία εφευρέθηκε από τους Σουμέριους κατά την τέταρτη χιλιετία προ Χριστού.
Το λεξικό φέρει τον κάπως παραπλανητικό επίσημο τίτλο (Ασσυριακό Λεξικό Σικάγο), προς τιμή του Τζέημς Χένρι Μπρέστιντ, ιδρυτή του Ασιατικού Ινστιτούτου του πανεπιστημίου, ο οποίος και ξεκίνησε τη συστηματική σύνταξη του λεξικού το 1921, έχοντας κατά νου ένα εξάτομο έργο στα πρότυπα του Λεξικού Αγγλικής Γλώσσας της Οξφόρδης.
Οι παλαιότεροι ερευνητές πίστευαν ότι τα περισσότερα γραπτά κείμενα αποδίδονταν στους Ασσύριους ηγεμόνες, καθώς επίσης ότι ο όρος «Ασσύριος» ήταν συνώνυμος με τις περισσότερες αρχαίες σημιτικές γλώσσες. Όμως η νεότερη έρευνα έχει πλέον δείξει ότι η βάση της γραπτής γλώσσας προέρχεται από την Ακκαδία.

Οργή προκάλεσε η χθεσινή είδηση ότι προ δεκαημέρου χάκερς κατόρθωσαν να υποκλέψουν τα προσωπικά δεδομένα των περίπου 70 εκατομμυρίων χρηστών του Playstation Network της Sony. Η εταιρία παραδέχθηκε μόλις χθες την κλοπή ενώ διέκοψε την παροχή των υπηρεσιών του δικτύου. Όσοι έχουν Playstation λοιπόν, καλό θα ήταν να αλλάξουν άμεσα τους κωδικούς τους!

H Sony παραδέχτηκε χθες την κλοπή των 70 εκατ. χρηστών του δικτύου του Playstation, παρά το γεγονός ότι αυτή έλαβε χώρα εννέα ημέρες νωρίτερα ενώ από την εταιρία έγινε αντιληπτή την περασμένη Τετάρτη.

Η εταιρεία επιβεβαίωσε ότι οι εισβολείς είχαν πρόσβαση στο ονοματεπώνυμο, στη διεύθυνση, στην ημερομηνία γέννησης, στη διεύθυνση ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου, ακόμη και στους κωδικούς πρόσβασης στο δίκτυο. Η εταιρία Sony δεν απέκλεισε το ενδεχόμενο να έκλεψαν και τους αριθμούς των πιστωτικών καρτών που ήταν αποθηκευμένοι στους σέρβερ της εταιρείας.

On this page I post reviews and links to freeware chemistry programs available for download at other sites around the internet. All of the programs are ones that I have used, or currently use. None-the-less, I take no responsiblity for any problems you might experience as a result of installing any of these applications. Unless otherwise noted, the programs are for Windows systems.

ACD/ChemSketch 12 Freeware. ACD continues to release updates to the outstanding Chemsketch freeware. Chemsketch is an all-purpose chemical drawing and graphics software. Use templates or free-hand. Click and draw molecules, ions, stereobonds, text, polygons, arrows, lab aparatus, etc. Automatic calculation of MW and formula. See estimates of density, refractive index, molar volume, etc. ACDLabs also offers free downloads on several useful utilities and template packages that extend the usefulness of ChemSketch.

Molegro Molecular Viewer is a free cross-platform application for visualization of molecules in PDB, SDF, Mol2, and MVDML formats, as well as docking results from Molegro Virtual Docker. This cross-platform application runs under Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Features include automatic preparation of molecules, molecular surface and backbone visualization.

Jmol is a free, open source molecule viewer for students, educators, and researchers in chemistry and biochemistry. It is cross-platform, running on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux/Unix systems. The JmolApplet is a web browser applet that can be integrated into web pages. The Jmol application is a standalone Java application that runs on the desktop. The JmolViewer is a development tool kit that can be integrated into other Java applications. Jmol is the applet that I use to run my Molecule Library. I recommend it enthusiastically!

Symyx Draw Standalone is a program that allows you to generate structural formulas for complex molecules using a very intuitive drag-and-drop interface. The resulting images can then be exported to a variety of graphic formats for use in websites or word-processor documents. Though of limited use to a beginning high school chemistry student, this could be a very valuable application to the AP or college student. It is of particular value to the chemistry instructor. Available for PC and Macintosh platforms. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Discovery Studio Visualizer 2.0 For those of you who remember WebLab Viewer, this is the updated version of that software from Accelrys. It includes a powerful molecular graphics viewer with superb rendering. An additional benefit is that graphics can be embedded in presentations such as Powerpoint using Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). You must complete a survey prior to downloading the software from Accelrys.

Chemistry Problems 1.0 exploits advanced numerical methods to generate instantaneously and continuously new situations and data to be inserted in numerous problems related to the various topics that are traditionally part of a basic Chemistry course. In each case, the software also calculates the corresponding solutions and shows them when prompted. Problems and solutions can be printed to pre-formatted text files, allowing to prepare personalized problem lists of any length and complexity. Various difficulty Levels can be selected, from the Basic Level (corresponding to the base preparation required for beginners) to the Excellent Level (a student capable of solving all problems of this level in various versions is certainly very well trained). When a level has been selected, the software shows only problems of difficulty lower or equal to that of the chosen level. The level can be changed at any moment. The software features a number of useful Tools, such as an advanced Calculator, a Plotting tool, a Balancer of chemical reactions and a Visualizer of simple molecular structures. It also includes some Simulations of idealized laboratory experiments and a few Games, devised in such a way to help fixing in mind the fundamental concepts of Chemistry while also verifying the reached learning level

.SimChemistry for Windows allows you to set up, run and interactively modify simulations on your PC representing microscopic physical systems. You can play existing demo simulations (including those supplied) to learn about the molecular-level behaviour behind macroscopic chemical phenomena, or record your own to show others. You may introduce any number of types of molecules, with their own masses, radii and colours, and specify how each pair of types of molecule should interact -- be it through hard billiard-ball type collisions or through attractive Lennard-Jones interactions with user-settable parameters. Observe the behaviour of solids, liquids, gases, and mixtures; apply pressure with moving pistons and measure quantities with monitor regions. Add annotations anywhere to explain the action on screen. Plot XY graphs of changing quantities, and modify parameters via on-screen controls.

KnowItAll Academic Edition - In a continued commitment to academia, Bio-Rad is offering this completely FREE and fully functional software package to promote learning and research in the academic community. With the Academic Edition of KnowItAll, you can have it all and know it all for free-draw structures, perform IR and Raman functional group analysis, and generate high-quality reports. And best of all, this set of tools resides in one common interface, so it's easy to learn and easy to transfer data from application to application. The KnowItAll Academic Edition also includes free training movies to teach professors and students how to use and get the most out of the software. This program requires Windows 2000, or XP (Home or Professional).

RasTop is a molecular visualization software adapted from the program RasMol. I had been looking for a replacement for the formerly free WebLab Viewer program, and this is an outstanding candidate. RasTop wraps a user-friendly graphical interface around the "RasMol molecular engine". The software allows several molecules to be opened in the same window and several windows to be opened at the same time. Through an extended menu and a command panel, users can manipulate numerous molecules rapidly and learn about them. In addition, users can export to POVRay to create artistic renderings of molecules.

The Chemical Thesaurus software uses a relational database to store information about any chemical reaction process, including: radiochemistry, phase change, resonance structure interconversion, interchanging conformation, single electron transfer, complexation, substitution-displacement-transfer (which are mechanistically equivalent), redox reactions, photochemistry, rearrangements, multi-step mechanisms, synthetic pathways, simple (non-feedback controlled) biosynthetic pathways, etc., etc., etc. The application software is extensively hyper-linked. Just click around, explore, discover. They have available a web-based version, and a downloadable version.

AcidBaseLab is a titration curve calculation program that can be used to simulate real titration experiments. This program does much more than simply calculating the pH of a strong or a weak acid (or base). Instead, it can perform ANY pH-calculation, independent of the complexity of the composition under consideration. During titration, the color (indicator changes) of the solution can be monitored. You can simply edit the list of possible acid/base chemicals as well as the pH-indicator list to match your specific needs. Other features include graphical representation (and printing) of titration curves, and the ability to save experiments.

The Virtual Laboratory from the ChemCollective is a new personal favorite. The online version is a java applet, but they now have a downloadable version that will run on any Windows desktop computer. The software allows a student or instructor to simulate many lab activities. Acid base titration, buffer chemistry, limiting reactant stoichiometry and solution equilibria are but a few of the simulations that are possible with this software. There is also an Authoring Program that allows instructors to design their own lab activities and add their own reagents.

EniG. Periodic Table of the Elements contains the basic data about the element in 7 languages (Croatian, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese). It shows visually the change of physical condition with the change of temperature. The language, the speed of temperature change and the exchange of elements can be adjusted by configuration file. The calculating module from the program Chemistry Assistant for fast calculating the molar mass of compounds has also been integrated in the Periodic Table. The Periodic Table can be incorporated into presentations, the change of temperature automatically started and the program closed. The color of background can be adjusted to match the color of the presentation slide.

Calc98 is a free engineering, scientific and financial calculator for Windows. The program includes functions for statistics, use of different number bases (binary, octal, hexadecimal and base-n), metric units conversions and physical properties and constants. It has financial functions including investment, loan and mortgage calculator. It also computes time functions and has a stopwatch feature. It runs on Microsoft Windows (WindowsNT, Windows95/98/ME, Windows2000/XP) and WindowsCE (Pocket PC).

The Royal Society of Chemistry's True Type Font is a Windows True Type font that allows you to put all of those hard to find chemistry symbols into your word processing documents. The font is free, but it is protected against embedding. If you try to use it in an Acrobat pdf document, the font will not embed, and the reader of the document will have to have the font installed in order to make sense of your work.

ChemLand is a program with many modules designed to illustrate and investigate important chemical principals and in some cases simulate lab activity. This is the original program on the website of its creator, Dr. William Vining. I have not run this program on Vista or XP, so I cannot attest to its compatability with those programs. You may need to run it in compatability mode.

Convert is an easy to use unit conversion program that will convert the most popular units of distance, temperature, volume, time, speed, mass, power, density, pressure, energy and many others, including the ability to create custom conversions!

Orbital Viewer is a program for drawing orbitals. This has many features, and comes in both a Windows version and a command-line interface version. Draw any atom, any molecule, create animations, do cutaways, show the locations where the probability goes to zero. Light the orbital from any location, cast shadows, and save files in TIFF, PPM, BMP, AVI, and VRML formats.

Sicyon is a software tool for everybody using physical or chemical formulas and tables of constants - students or professors; physicists or chemists; scientists or engineers. It is easy-to-use and has everything you need when you calculate or analyze your formula. Sicyon is all-in-one type of software consisting of an expression calculator, constants database, units converter, and solver. A superb program that requires only 1.5 megs of your hard drive.

Η τροποποίηση αυτή στον οργανισμό τους συνδέεται με την παραγωγικότητά τους μέσα στο οικονομικό σύστημα της εφιαλτικής κοινωνίας. Το πέρασμα στην ανεργία ισοδυναμεί αργά ή γρήγορα με έναν αναπότρεπτο θάνατο. Ένας διαζευγμένος σύζυγος θα κληθεί να αντιμετωπίσει αυτό το πρόβλημα όταν μετά από αρκετό διάστημα «μη παραγωγικότητας» ενημερώνεται ταχυδρομικά ότι το μηχάνημα που προστατεύει τον οργανισμό του, θα πάψει να σύντομα λειτουργεί.

Ίσως η πιο ανατρεπτική ταινία του Αμερικανού σκηνοθέτη Σπάικ Λι, σχετικά με τις φυλετικές διαφορές στις ΗΠΑ και πως αυτές θα μπορέσουν κάποια στιγμή να ξεπεραστούν.

Ο έγχρωμος σκηνοθέτης καταπιάνεται με τους ομόφυλούς του, σε μια προσπάθεια νακαυτηριάσει τα κλισέ αλλά και τη «λευκοποίηση» των ομοεθνών του μέσα από την ιστορία ενός μαύρου συγγραφέα-παραγωγού της τηλεόρασης που δημιουργεί ένα τηλεοπτικό πρόγραμμα με λευκούς μουσικούς που υποδύονται τους μαύρους - ένα σόου, δηλαδή, βασισμένο στις ιδέες που έχει σχηματίσει γι' αυτούς η κοινότητα των λευκών.

Η ταινία, που δεν προβλήθηκε ποτέ στις ελληνικές αίθουσες, αποτελεί εκτός από κοινωνική κριτική και μια σάτιρα στα κυρίαρχα μίντια. Ένα ιλαροτραγικό σχόλιο για τη σημερινή κατάσταση της τηλεόρασης και τις αποκρουστικές ιδέες που προωθούν στο κοινό οι παραγωγοί της, με έπαθλο την τηλεθέαση.

Και σ' αυτά τα 50 χρόνια, όχι μόνο περπατήσαμε κυριολεκτικά στο φεγγάρι, Αλλά στείλαμε και ρομποτικά διαστημόπλοια σε όλους τους πλανήτες - και στους οκτώ - και προσγειωθήκαμε σε αστεροειδείς, συναντηθήκαμε με κομήτες, και αυτή τη στιγμή έχουμε ένα διαστημόπλοιο καθ' οδόν για τον Πλούτωνα, το σώμα που άλλοτε ήταν γνωστό ως πλανήτης.

Και όλες αυτές οι ρομποτικές αποστολές είναι μέρος ενός μεγαλύτερου ανθρώπινου ταξιδιού: ενός ταξιδιού για να κατανοήσουμε κάτι, για να αποκτήσουμε αίσθηση της θέσης μας στο σύμπαν, για να καταλάβουμε κάτι για την καταγωγή μας, και για το πώς η Γη, ο πλανήτης μας, και εμείς, που ζούμε πάνω του, δημιουργηθήκαμε. Και από όλα τα μέρη του ηλιακού συστήματος που μπορούμε να πάμε και να αναζητήσουμε απαντήσεις σε ερωτήσεις σαν κι αυτή, ορίστε ο Κρόνος. Και έχουμε πάει στον Κρόνο στο παρελθόν -- επισκεφθήκαμε τον Κρόνο στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980 -- άλλα οι έρευνές μας για τον Κρόνο έχουν γίνει πολύ πιο βαθιές και λεπτομερείς από τότε που το διαστημόπλοιο Cassini, ταξιδεύοντας στο διαπλανητικό διάστημα επί επτά χρόνια, μπήκε σε τροχιά γύρω από τον Κρόνο το καλοκαίρι του 2004, και έγινε τη στιγμή εκείνη το πιο προωθημένο ρομποτικό φυλάκιο που εγκατέστησε ποτέ η ανθρωπότητα γύρω από τον Ήλιο.

Τώρα, το σύστημα του Κρόνου είναι ένα πλούσιο πλανητικό σύστημα. Προσφέρει μυστήριο, επιστημονική επίγνωση και προφανώς μεγαλοπρέπεια πέρα από κάθε σύγκριση, και η έρευνα αυτού του συστήματος έχει τεράστιες κοσμικές προεκτάσεις. Γεγονός είναι ότι, μελετώντας απλά και μόνο τους δακτυλίους περιμένουμε να μάθουμε πολλά σχετικά με τους δίσκους αστέρων και αερίων που ονομάζουμε σπειροειδείς γαλαξίες. Και να μια όμορφη εικόνα του Νεφελώματος της Ανδρομέδας, που είναι ο πλησιέστερος, μεγαλύτερος σπειροειδής γαλαξίας προς τον Γαλαξία μας. Και στη συνέχεια να μία όμορφη σύνθετη εικόνα του Γαλαξία Whirlpool, που ελήφθη από το διαστημικό τηλεσκόπιο Hubble.

Έτσι, το ταξίδι πίσω στον Κρόνο αποτελεί μέρος -και επίσης συμβολισμό- ενός πολύ μεγαλύτερου ταξιδιού του ανθρώπου προς την κατανόηση της διασύνδεσης των πάντων γύρω μας, και επίσης του πώς οι άνθρωποι ταιριάζουν μέσα σε αυτή την εικόνα. Και λυπάμαι που δεν μπορώ να σας πω όλα όσα έχουμε μάθει με το Cassini -- δεν μπορώ να σας δείξω όλες τις όμορφες εικόνες που έχουμε τραβήξει τα τελευταία δυόμισι χρόνια, επειδή απλά δεν έχω τον χρόνο. Έτσι θα επικεντρωθώ στις δύο συναρπαστικότερες ιστορίες που έχουν προκύψει από αυτή τη μεγάλη εξερευνητική αποστολή που διεξάγουμε γύρω από τον Κρόνο, και που βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη τα τελευταία δυόμισι χρόνια.

Ο Κρόνος συνοδεύεται από μία πολύ μεγάλη και ποικιλόμορφη συλλογή φεγγαριών. Κυμαίνονται σε μέγεθος από μερικά χιλιόμετρα μέχρι τόσο μεγάλα όσο το μήκος των ΗΠΑ. Οι περισσότερες από τις όμορφες φωτογραφίες που έχουμε τραβήξει στον Κρόνο, για την ακρίβεια, δείχνουν τον Κρόνο σε συνοδεία με μερικά από τα φεγγάρια του. Εδώ είναι ο Κρόνος με την Διώνη, κι εδώ είναι ο Κρόνος που δείχνει την κόψη των δακτυλίων του, δείχνοντας πόσο λεπτοί είναι καθέτως, με το φεγγάρι Εγκέλαδος. Τώρα, δύο από τα 47 φεγγάρια που έχει ο Κρόνος είναι ξεχωριστά. Και αυτοί είναι ο Τιτάνας και ο Εγκέλαδος.

Ο Τιτάνας είναι το μεγαλύτερο φεγγάρι του Κρόνου, και μέχρι να φτάσει εκεί το Cassini, ήταν η μεγαλύτερη αδιαίρετη ανεξερεύνητη περιοχή που μας είχε απομείνει στο ηλιακό μας σύστημα. Και είναι ένα σώμα που από καιρό προκαλούσε την περιέργεια των ανθρώπων που μελετούσαν τους πλανήτες. Έχει μία πολύ μεγάλη, πυκνή ατμόσφαιρα, και μάλιστα το περιβάλλον της επιφανείας του πιστευόταν ότι μοιάζει περισσότερο με το περιβάλλον που έχουμε εδώ στη Γη, ή τουλάχιστον που είχαμε στο παρελθόν, απ' ότι με οποιοδήποτε άλλο σώμα στο ηλιακό σύστημα.

Η ατμόσφαιρά του είναι κυρίως μοριακό άζωτο, όπως αυτό που αναπνέετε εδώ σ' αυτό το χώρο, με τη διαφορά ότι στην ατμόσφαιρά του είναι διάχυτες απλές οργανικές ουσίες, όπως μεθάνιο και προπάνιο και αιθάνιο. Και αυτά τα μόρια ψηλά στην ατμόσφαιρα του Τιτάνα διασπώνται, και τα παράγωγά τους ενώνονται για να δημιουργήσουν σωματίδια νέφους. Αυτό το νέφος είναι πανταχού παρόν, είναι πραγματικά παντού και περιτυλίγει τον Τιτάνα. Και γι' αυτό δεν μπορούμε να δούμε μέχρι το έδαφος με τα μάτια μας στην ορατή περιοχή του φάσματος.

Αλλά αυτά τα σωματίδια νέφους, εικαζόταν, πριν πάμε εκεί με το Cassini, ότι επί δισεκατομμύρια και δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια παρασύρονταν απαλά μέχρι το έδαφος και κάλυπταν την επιφάνεια με μια παχιά οργανική λάσπη. Το αντίστοιχο της πίσσας στον Τιτάνα, ή του πετρελαίου -- δεν ξέραμε τι. Αλλά αυτό υποπτευόμασταν. Και αυτά τα μόρια, ειδικά το μεθάνιο και το αιθάνιο, μπορούν να είναι υγρά στις θερμοκρασίες της επιφάνειας του Τιτάνα. Κι έτσι προκύπτει ότι το μεθάνιο είναι για τον Τιτάνα ό,τι το νερό για την Γη. Μπορεί να συμπυκνώνεται στην ατμόσφαιρα, κι έτσι η αναγνώριση αυτής της κατάστασης έφερε στο προσκήνιο έναν ολόκληρο κόσμο αλλόκοτων πιθανοτήτων. Μπορεί να υπάρχουν σύννεφα μεθανίου, εντάξει, και πάνω από αυτά τα σύννεφα έχουμε εκατοντάδες χιλιόμετρα νέφους, που εμποδίζουν το φως του ήλιου να φτάσει στην επιφάνεια. Η θερμοκρασία στην επιφάνεια είναι περίπου 212 βαθμοί Κελσίου υπό το μηδέν. Αλλά παρόλο το κρύο, θα μπορούσε να πέφτει βροχή στην επιφάνεια του Τιτάνα. Και να κάνει στον Τιτάνα ό,τι κάνει η βροχή στη Γη, χαράζει ρεματιές, σχηματίζει ποτάμια και καταρράκτες.

Μπορεί να δημιουργεί φαράγγια, μπορεί να συγκεντρώνεται σε μεγάλες λεκάνες και κρατήρες. Μπορεί να ξεπλένει τη λάσπη από τις ψηλές βουνοκορφές και τους λόφους και να την παρασύρει στα πεδινά. Οπότε σταματήστε και σκεφτείτε για ένα λεπτό. Προσπαθήστε να φανταστείτε πώς θα μπορούσε να είναι η επιφάνεια του Τιτάνα. Είναι σκοτεινά - το καταμεσήμερο στον Τιτάνα είναι τόσο σκοτεινό όσο το βαθύ λυκόφως στη Γη. Κάνει κρύο, είναι απόκοσμα, έχει ομίχλη, μπορεί να βρέχει, και μπορεί να στέκεστε στις όχθες της λίμνης Μίσιγκαν, γεμάτης με διαλυτικό μπογιάς.

Αυτή ήταν η άποψη που είχαμε για την επιφάνεια του Τιτάνα πριν πάμε εκεί με το Cassini, και μπορώ να σας πω ότι αυτά που βρήκαμε στον Τιτάνα, παρότι δεν είναι ακριβώς τα ίδια, είναι εξίσου συναρπαστικά με αυτή την ιστορία. Και για εμάς ήταν --Για τους ανθρώπους του Cassini ήταν σαν να πραγματοποιήθηκε μία περιπέτεια του Ιούλιου Βερν. Όπως είπα, έχει μία πυκνή εκτεταμένη ατμόσφαιρα. Αυτή είναι μία εικόνα του Τιτάνα καθώς τον φωτίζει ο ήλιος από πίσω, με τους δακτυλίους σαν ένα όμορφο φόντο. Κι ακόμα ένα φεγγάρι εκεί -- ούτε που ξέρω ποιο είναι. Είναι μια πολύ εκτεταμένη ατμόσφαιρα.

Έχουμε όργανα στο Cassini που μπορούν να δουν μέχρι κάτω στην επιφάνεια μέσα από αυτή την ατμόσφαιρα, και το φωτογραφικό μου σύστημα είναι ένα από αυτά. Και έχουμε τραβήξει φωτογραφίες σαν κι αυτή. Και αυτό που βλέπετε είναι φωτεινές και σκοτεινές περιοχές, και μέχρι εκεί καταφέραμε να φτάσουμε. Ήταν τόσο περίπλοκο -- δεν μπορούσαμε να καταλάβουμε τι βλέπαμε στον Τιτάνα. Αν εστιάσετε σ' αυτή την περιοχή, αρχίζετε να διακρίνετε πράγματα όπως ελικοειδή κανάλια, δεν γνωρίζαμε. Βλέπετε μερικά στρογγυλά πράγματα. Αυτό, ανακαλύψαμε αργότερα, είναι ένας κρατήρας, αλλά υπάρχουν ελάχιστοι κρατήρες στην επιφάνεια του Τιτάνα, που σημαίνει ότι είναι μία πολύ νέα επιφάνεια. Και υπάρχουν χαρακτηριστικά που μοιάζουν τεκτονικά.

Μοιάζουν σαν να έχουν σκιστεί στα δύο. Όποτε βλέπετε κάτι γραμμικό σε έναν πλανήτη, σημαίνει ότι έχει συμβεί μια τομή, σαν ένα ρήγμα. Κι έτσι έχει υποστεί τεκτονικές αλλοιώσεις. Αλλά δεν μπορούσαμε να βγάλουμε νόημα από τις εικόνες μας, μέχρι έξι μήνες αφότου μπήκαμε σε τροχιά, σημειώθηκε ένα γεγονός που πολλοί έχουν θεωρήσει ως το αποκορύφωμα των ερευνών του Cassini στον Τιτάνα. Ήταν η στιγμή που βάλαμε σε λειτουργία τη συσκευή Huygens, την ευρωπαϊκή συσκευή Huygens που μετέφερε το Cassini για 7 ολόκληρα χρόνια κατά μήκος του ηλιακού συστήματος. Την αφήσαμε ελεύθερη στην ατμόσφαιρα του Τιτάνα, χρειάστηκε δυόμισι ώρες καθόδου, και προσγειώθηκε στην επιφάνεια. Και θέλω πολύ να τονίσω πόσο σημαντικό γεγονός είναι αυτό. Πρόκειται για μία συσκευή που κατασκεύασε ο άνθρωπος, και προσγειώθηκε στο εξώτερο ηλιακό σύστημα για πρώτη φορά στην ανθρώπινη ιστορία. Είναι τόσο σημαντικό που κατά τη γνώμη μου, ήταν ένα γεγονός που θα έπρεπε να είχε γιορταστεί με φιέστες και παρελάσεις σε κάθε πόλη των ΗΠΑ και της Ευρώπης, και δυστυχώς δεν συνέβη αυτό. (Γέλια).

Ήταν σημαντικό για έναν ακόμα λόγο. Πρόκειται για μια διεθνή αποστολή, και το γεγονός αυτό γιορτάστηκε στην Ευρώπη, στη Γερμανία, και οι εορταστικές παρουσιάσεις έγιναν με αγγλικές προφορές με αμερικάνικες, με γερμανικές, με γαλλικές, με ιταλικές και με ολλανδικές προφορές. Ήταν μία συγκινητική επίδειξη του τι θα έπρεπε να σημαίνουν οι λέξεις «Ηνωμένα Έθνη»: μία αληθινή ένωση εθνών, συνασπισμένων σε μία κολοσσιαία προσπάθεια για το καλό. Και στην περίπτωση αυτή, ήταν ένα μαζικό εγχείρημα για την εξερεύνηση ενός πλανήτη και για την κατανόηση ενός πλανητικού συστήματος που καθ' όλη την ανθρώπινη ιστορία ήταν απρόσιτο, και που τώρα οι άνθρωποι είχαν τελικά αγγίξει

Έτσι λοιπόν -- δηλαδή, ανατριχιάζω και μόνο που μιλάω γι' αυτό, ήταν ένα τρομερά συναισθηματικό γεγονός, και είναι κάτι που εγώ προσωπικά δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ, και ούτε κι εσείς θα έπρεπε να ξεχάσετε. (Χειροκρότημα). Αλλά εν πάση περιπτώσει, η συσκευή πήρε μετρήσεις από την ατμόσφαιρα κατά την κάθοδο, και πήρε επίσης πανοραμικές φωτογραφίες. Και δεν μπορώ να σας περιγράψω πώς ήταν το να βλέπεις τις πρώτες εικόνες της επιφάνειας του Τιτάνα από τη βολίδα. Και αυτό είναι αυτό που είδαμε. Και ήταν ένα σοκ, γιατί ήταν όλα όσα θέλαμε να είναι εκείνες οι άλλες εικόνες που είχαν παρθεί από τροχιά.

Ήταν ένα ευκρινές μοτίβο, ένα γεωλογικό μοτίβο. Είναι ένας δενδριτικός σχηματισμός απορροής που μπορεί να διαμορφωθεί μόνο από την ροή υγρών. Και μπορείτε να ακολουθήσετε αυτά τα κανάλια και θα δείτε ότι όλα συγκλίνουν. Και συγκλίνουν σ' αυτό εδώ το κανάλι, το οποίο απορρέει σ' αυτή την περιοχή. Κοιτάτε μία ακτογραμμή. Ήταν μία ακτογραμμή υγρών; Δεν ξέραμε. Αλλά μοιάζει με ακτογραμμή. Η εικόνα αυτή ελήφθη στα 16 χιλιόμετρα. Αυτή είναι η εικόνα που ελήφθη στα οκτώ χιλιόμετρα, εντάξει; Ξανά, η ακτογραμμή.

Εντάξει, τώρα 16 χιλιόμετρα, 8 χιλιόμετρα - αυτό είναι χονδρικά το ύψος πτήσης των αεροπλάνων. Αν κάνατε ένα ταξίδι με αεροπλάνο στις ΗΠΑ, θα πετούσατε σ' αυτά τα ύψη. Οπότε, αυτή την εικόνα θα βλέπατε από το παράθυρο των Τιτάνιων Αερογραμμών καθώς θα πετούσατε πάνω από την επιφάνεια του Τιτάνα. (Γέλια) Και τελικά, η βολίδα προσγειώθηκε στην επιφάνεια, και πρόκειται να σας δείξω, κυρίες και κύριοι, την πρώτη εικόνα που ελήφθη ποτέ από την επιφάνεια ενός φεγγαριού στο εξώτερο ηλιακό σύστημα. Κι εδώ είναι ο ορίζοντας, εντάξει; Αυτά είναι πιθανότατα βότσαλα από πάγο νερού, ναι; (χειροκρότημα). Και προφανώς προσγειώθηκε σε μια από αυτές τις επίπεδες, σκοτεινές περιοχές και δεν βυθίστηκε. Άρα δεν ήταν υγρό αυτό στο οποίο προσγειωθήκαμε. Αυτό στο οποίο προσγειώθηκε η βολίδα ήταν βασικά το αντίστοιχο μιας λασπώδους λεκάνης στον Τιτάνα.

Πρόκειται για χαλαρό έδαφος, διαποτισμένο από υγρό μεθάνιο. Και πιθανότατα αυτό το υλικό ξεπλύθηκε από τα υψίπεδα του Τιτάνα μέσω αυτών των καναλιών που είδαμε, και συσσωρεύθηκε επί δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια, γεμίζοντας λεκάνες στα πεδινά. Και σ' αυτό προσγειώθηκε η βολίδα Huygens. Αλλά ακόμα δεν υπάρχει κανένα σημάδι στις εικόνες μας, ή στις εικόνες του Huygens, που να μαρτυρά μεγάλες, ανοικτές μάζες υγρών. Που βρίσκονταν; Τα πράγματα έγιναν ακόμα πιο περίεργα όταν βρήκαμε αμμόλοφους. Λοιπόν, αυτή είναι η ταινία μας από την περιοχή του ισημερινού στον Τιτάνα, που δείχνει αυτούς τους αμμόλοφους. Αυτοί είναι αμμόλοφοι που έχουν ύψος 100 μέτρων, χωρίζονται για μερικά χιλιόμετρα, και συνεχίζουν για μίλια και μίλια.

Υπάρχουν εκατοντάδες, σχεδόν 1.000 ή 1.200 μίλια αμμόλοφων. Αυτή είναι η έρημος Σαχάρα του Τιτάνα. Είναι προφανώς ένα πολύ ξηρό μέρος, αλλιώς δεν θα υπήρχαν αμμόλοφοι. Ξανά λοιπόν, μας μπέρδευε το ότι δεν υπήρχαν μάζες υγρών, μέχρι που τελικά είδαμε λίμνες στις πολικές περιοχές. Και να μία λίμνη στη νότια πολική περιοχή του Τιτάνα. Έχει περίπου το μέγεθος της λίμνης Οντάριο. Κι έπειτα, μόλις πριν από μιάμιση εβδομάδα, πετάξαμε πάνω από τον βόρειο πόλο του Τιτάνα και βρήκαμε, ξανά, βρήκαμε έναν σχηματισμό εδώ στο μέγεθος της Κασπίας Θάλασσας. Έτσι, φαίνεται πως τα υγρά, για κάποιο λόγο που δεν καταλαβαίνουμε, ή τουλάχιστον κατά την διάρκεια αυτής της εποχής, βρίσκονται προφανώς στους πόλους του Τιτάνα. Και νομίζω ότι θα συμφωνούσατε ότι βρήκαμε πως ο Τιτάνας είναι ένα αξιοσημείωτο, μυστηριώδες μέρος.

Είναι εξωτικός, είναι ξένος, αλλά περιέργως μοιάζει με τη γη, και έχει γεωλογικούς σχηματισμούς παρόμοιους με τη Γη και μία τεράστια γεωγραφική ποικιλομορφία, και είναι ένας συναρπαστικός κόσμος του οποίου ο μόνος ανταγωνιστής στο ηλιακό σύστημα ως προς την πολυπλοκότητα και τον πλούτο, είναι η ίδια η Γη. Και τώρα λοιπόν πάμε στον Εγκέλαδο. Ο Εγκέλαδος είναι ένα μικρό φεγγάρι, είναι περίπου το ένα δέκατο του Τιτάνα, και μπορείτε να τον δείτε εδώ δίπλα στην Αγγλία. Απλά για να σας δείξω το μέγεθος? δεν πρόκειται για κάποια απειλή. (Γέλια). Και ο Εγκέλαδος είναι πολύ λευκός, είναι πολύ λαμπρός, και η επιφάνειά του είναι εμφανώς χαρακωμένη με ρωγμές, είναι ένα πολύ γεωλογικά ενεργό σώμα.

Αλλά η μεγαλύτερη όλων των ανακαλύψεων στον Εγκέλαδο έγινε στον νότιο πόλο -- και βλέπουμε τον νότιο πόλο εδώ -- όπου ανακαλύψαμε αυτό το σύμπλεγμα ρωγμών. Και έχουν διαφορετικό χρώμα επειδή έχουν διαφορετική σύνθεση. Είναι επικαλυμμένες. Αυτές οι ρωγμές είναι επικαλυμμένες με οργανικά υλικά. Επιπλέον, ολόκληρη αυτή η περιοχή, η νότια πολική περιοχή, έχει αυξημένες θερμοκρασίες. Είναι το πιο θερμό μέρος στον πλανήτη, στο σώμα. Κάτι τόσο παράξενο όσο το να βρίσκαμε ότι η Ανταρ- κτική στη Γη είναι θερμότερη από τους τροπικούς. Κι έπειτα, όταν πήραμε κι άλλες φωτογραφίες, ανακαλύψαμε ότι από αυτές τις ρωγμές εκτοξεύονται πίδακες μικρών σωματιδίων πάγου που εκτείνονται για εκατοντάδες μίλια στο διάστημα. Και όταν χρωματοκωδικοποιούμε αυτή την εικόνα για να αναδείξουμε τα χαμηλότερα επίπεδα φωτός, βλέπουμε ότι αυτοί οι πίδακες τροφοδοτούν ένα νέφος το οποίο μάλιστα, όπως βλέπουμε σε άλλες φωτογραφίες, εκτείνεται για χιλιάδες μίλια στο διάστημα πάνω από τον Εγκέλαδο.

Η ομάδα μου κι εγώ έχουμε εξετάσει εικόνες σαν κι αυτή και σαν αυτή εδώ, και έχουμε λάβει υπόψη και τα άλλα αποτελέσματα από το Cassini. Και έχουμε καταλήξει στο συμπέρασμα ότι αυτοί οι πίδακες ίσως να εκτοξεύονται από θύλακες υγρού νερού κάτω από την επιφάνεια του Εγκέλαδου. Έτσι έχουμε, πιθανώς, υγρό νερό, οργανικά υλικά και περίσσεια θερμότητας. Με άλλα λόγια, ίσως σκοντάψαμε επάνω στο Ιερό Δισκοπότηρο της σύγχρονης πλανητικής εξερεύνησης. Ή με άλλα λόγια, σε ένα περιβάλλον που είναι δυνητικά κατάλληλο για ζωντανούς οργανισμούς. Και δεν νομίζω πως χρειάζεται να σας πω ότι η ανακάλυψη ζωής κάπου αλλού στο ηλιακό σύστημα, είτε είναι στον Εγκέλαδο είτε κάπου αλλού, θα είχε τεράστιες πολιτισμικές και επιστημονικές επιπτώσεις.

Γιατί αν μπορέσουμε να δείξουμε ότι η Γένεση συνέβη όχι μία, αλλά δύο φορές, ανεξάρτητα στο ηλιακό μας σύστημα, τότε αυτό σημαίνει, συμπερασματικά, ότι έχει συμβεί αμέτρητες φορές απ' άκρη σε άκρη του σύμπαντος και της 13,7 δισεκατομμυρίων ετών ιστορίας του. Αυτή τη στιγμή, η Γη είναι ακόμη ο μόνος πλανήτης που γνωρίζουμε ότι σφύζει από ζωή. Είναι πολύτιμη, είναι μοναδική, και είναι ακόμη, ως τώρα, το μόνο σπίτι που γνωρίζουμε. Και αν κάποιοι από εσάς ήσασταν νηφάλιοι και συγκροτημένοι κατά τη δεκαετία του 1960 - και σας συγχωρούμε αν δεν ήσασταν, εντάξει; - θα θυμάστε αυτή την πολύ διάσημη εικόνα που πάρθηκε από τους αστροναύτες του Apollo 8, το 1968.

Ήταν η πρώτη φορά που η Γη φωτογραφήθηκε από το διάστημα, και είχε τεράστια επίδραση στη συναίσθηση της θέσης μας στο σύμπαν, και στη συναίσθηση της ευθύνης για την προστασία του πλανήτη μας. Λοιπόν, εμείς στο Cassini πήραμε μια αντίστοιχη πρωτιά, μία εικόνα που κανένα ανθρώπινο μάτι δεν είχε δει πρωτύτερα. Είναι μία ολική έκλειψη ηλίου, όπως φαίνεται από την άλλη μεριά του Κρόνου. Και σε αυτή την απίστευτα όμορφη εικόνα βλέπετε τους κυρίους δακτυλίους καθώς ο ήλιος τους φωτίζει από πίσω, βλέπετε το διαθλασμένο είδωλο του ηλίου και βλέπετε τον δακτύλιο που δημιουργείται από τις αναθυμιάσεις του Εγκέλαδου.

Αλλά σα να μην έφταναν όλα αυτά, μπορούμε να εντοπίσουμε σ' αυτή την όμορφη εικόνα, και τον δικό μας πλανήτη, στην αγκαλιά των δακτυλίων του Κρόνου. Τώρα, υπάρχει κάτι βαθιά συγκινητικό στο να βλέπουμε τον εαυτό μας από μακριά, και να συλλαμβάνουμε την εικόνα του μικρού γαλάζιου πλανήτη μας στους ουρανούς άλλων κόσμων. Και αυτό, και η προοπτική του εαυτού μας που αποκομίζουμε από αυτό, ίσως να είναι, τελικά, η καλύτερη επιβράβευση που κερδίζουμε από αυτό το ταξίδι εξερεύνησης που ξεκίνησε μισό αιώνα πριν. Το σημαντικότερο τεχνολογικό επίτευγμα της αρχαιότητας, ο "Μηχανισμός των Αντικυθήρων", ενέπνευσε ένα σχεδιαστή που κατόρθωσε να δημιουργήσει ένα λειτουργικό αντίγραφό του με κομμάτια από Lego.
Ο Andrew Carol, σχεδιαστής και μηχανικός της Apple, προχώρησε στην κατασκευή ενός λειτουργικού αντιγράφου του, χρησιμοποιώντας 1.500 εξειδικευμένα κομμάτια και 110 γρανάζια lego (Lego Technic).
Αυτό το αρχαίο τέχνημα, που ανακαλύφθηκε σε ένα αρχαίο ναυάγιο το 1900 και βρίσκεται στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο τηςΑθήνας, αποτελεί ένα μηχανικό υπολογιστή και όργανο αστρονομικών παρατηρήσεων που παρουσιάζει ομοιότητες με πολύπλοκο ωρολογιακό μηχανισμό.
Εκτιμάται ότι κατασκευάστηκε περίπου το 150 π.Χ. και από τότε που ανακαλύφθηκε έχει εκπλήξει τους επιστήμονες όλου του κόσμου με την τεχνική πολυπλοκότητά του και το εύρος των γνώσεων που προϋποθέτει.
Ο "Μηχανισμός των Αντικυθήρων" έχει αναδημιουργηθεί πολλές φορές, αλλά αυτή είναι η πρώτη φορά που κατασκευάστηκε ένα αντίγραφο από lego, το οποίο μάλιστα λειτουργεί κανονικά. "Αναπαρήγαμε έναν υπολογιστή του 1ου αιώνα προ Χριστού, με το καλύτερο παιγνίδι που έχει εφεύρει ποτέ η ανθρωπότητα", δήλωσε χαρακτηριστικά ο Adam Rutherford που είχε την αρχική ιδέα.

Το καταπληκτικό ταξίδι του National Geographic έως στην άκρη του σύμπαντος μας κάνει να συνειδητοποιούμε πόσο πραγματικά μικροί είμαστε αλλά ταυτόχρονα και πόσο μοναδικοί, θυμίζοντας τη γραφή του Βρετανού μαθηματικού και φιλόσοφου Μπέρτραντ Ράσελ:

«Η φιλοσοφία της φύσης δεν πρέπει να περιορίζεται υπέρμετρα στη Γη. Η Γη είναι ένας από τους μικρότερους πλανήτες σε ένα από τα μικρότερα ηλιακά συστήματα του γαλαξία μας. Θα ήταν γελοίο να κατευθύνουμε τη φιλοσοφία της φύσης έτσι ώστε να εξάγουμε συμπεράσματα που στόχο έχουν να ικανοποιήσουν την ψυχολογία των μικροσκοπικών παρασίτων αυτού του ασήμαντου πλανήτη. Ο βιταλισμός ως φιλοσοφία, και η εξελιξιαρχία (evolutionism), δείχνουν μια έλλειψη αναλογίας και λογικής συνάφειας. Θεωρούν ότι τα γεγονότα της ζωής που μας ενδιαφέρουν προσωπικά, έχουν μια κοσμική σημασία και όχι μια σημασία που περιορίζεται στην επιφάνεια της Γης. Η αισιοδοξία και η απαισιοδοξία, ως κοσμικές φιλοσοφίες, δείχνουν τον ίδιο αφελή ανθρωπισμό. Το σύμπαν, στο βαθμό που μπορούμε να ξέρουμε από τη φιλοσοφία της φύσης, δεν είναι ούτε καλό ούτε κακό· δεν ενδιαφέρεται να μας κάνει ευτυχισμένους ή δυστυχισμένους. Όλες οι φιλοσοφίες αυτού του είδους πηγάζουν από υπερβολική σημασία για τον εαυτό μας και διορθώνονται έξοχα με λίγη αστρονομία.

Στη φιλοσοφία όμως των αξιών, η κατάσταση αντιστρέφεται. Η φύση είναι μόνο μέρος όσων μπορούμε να φανταστούμε. Τα πάντα, πραγματικά ή φανταστικά, μπορούν να εξυμνηθούν από εμάς και δεν υπάρχει κάποιο εξωτερικό κριτήριο για να καταδείξει το πιθανό σφάλμα της αξιολόγησής μας. Εμείς είμαστε οι έσχατοι και αδιάψευστοι κριτές της αξίας, και στον κόσμο των αξιών η φύση είναι μόνο μέρος. Σε αυτόν τον κόσμο, λοιπόν, είμαστε σημαντικότεροι από τη φύση. Στον κόσμο των αξιών, η φύση καθεαυτή είναι ουδέτερη. Ούτε καλή ούτε κακή. Δίχως να αξίζει το θαυμασμό μας ή την αδιαφορία μας. Είμαστε εμείς οι δημιουργοί των αξιών και είναι οι επιθυμίες μας που απονέμουν αξία. Σε αυτή την επικράτεια είμαστε βασιλιάδες και όταν υποκλινόμαστε στη φύση υποβαθμίζουμε το βασίλειό μας. Επαφίεται σε εμάς να προσδιορίσουμε την καλή ζωή, όχι στη φύση - ούτε καν σε μια φύση προσωποποιημένη σαν Θεός».

Ανεξάρτητα από το αν συμφωνεί ή διαφωνεί κανείς με το παραπάνω απόσπασμα (Μπέρτραντ Ράσελ, «Τι πιστεύω», 1925) το «διαστημόπλοιο» Γη προσφέρει τη δυνατότητα για ένα τέτοιο... «μάθημα αστρονομίας». Μπορούμε να απολαύσουμε, λοιπόν, την απίστευτη διαδρομή μέσα από αστέρια και γαλαξίες μέχρι τις πιο απομακρυσμένες περιοχές του γνωστού σύμπαντος.

Ο Μεγάλος Επιταχυντής Αδρονίων του Κέντρου Πυρηνικών Ερευνών του Ευρωπαϊκού Κέντρου Πυρηνικών Ερευνών (CERN)

Σε αυτή τη διάλεξη (2008), ο πρώην ροκ σταρ και νυν καθηγητής θεωρητικής φυσικής στο πανεπιστήμιο του Μάντσεστερ, Μπράιαν Κοξ, μιλάει για τη δουλειά του στον Μεγάλο Επιταχυντή Αδρονίων (Large Hadron Collider - LHC) του Ευρωπαϊκού Κέντρου Πυρηνικών Ερευνών (CERN) στη Γενεύη.

Λίγο πριν την αναμενόμενη έναρξη λειτουργίας του επιταχυντή στις 10 Σεπτεμβρίου του 2008, ο Κοξ με απλό και κατανοητό τρόπο μας μεταφέρει στο χώρο του μεγαλύτερου συλλογικού επιστημονικού πειράματος στην ιστορία την ανθρωπότητας.

Πρόκειται για ένα έργο υψηλής τεχνολογίας που στόχο έχει να μελετήσει τις πλέον μικρές δομές της ύλης, δίνοντας απαντήσεις σε θεμελιώδη ερωτήματα της φυσικής. Η κατασκευή του διήρκεσε δώδεκα χρόνια στο πλαίσιο προγράμματος που κόστισε πολλά δισεκατομμύρια ευρώ και απασχόλησε 7.000 φυσικούς. Βρίσκεται σε βάθος 100 μέτρων, μέσα σε μια υπόγεια σήραγγα 27 χιλιομέτρων που διασχίζει τα σύνορα Γαλλίας-Ελβετίας. Εντός αυτής λαμβάνουν χώρα μια σειρά από πειράματα που ίσως δώσουν τις απαντήσεις για το παρελθόν του Σύμπαντος και πιθανώς επιβεβαιώσουν πειραματικά την ύπαρξη του περίφημου σωματιδίου Higgs - το σωματίδιο «κλειδί» για την κατανόηση της φύσης της ύλης, που ενώ προβλέπεται από την ισχύουσα θεωρητική φυσική μένει να παρατηρηθεί στο εργαστήριο.

Λίγες ώρες μετά την πανηγυρική έναρξη της λειτουργίας του, ο επιταχυντής υπέστη δύο διαδοχικές βλάβες. Η πρώτη παρουσιάσθηκε λιγότερο από 48 ώρες μετά την έναρξη του μεγάλου πειράματος και η δεύτερη -που κρίθηκε σοβαρή, στις 19 Σεπτεμβρίου- προκάλεσε τη διακοπή της λειτουργίας του μεγάλου επιταχυντή.

Ο Μπράιαν Κοξ επιστρέφοντας για μια σύντομη διάλεξη στο συνέδριο TED, ένα χρόνο μετά, εξηγεί τι δεν πήγε καλά το 2008.

Ας σημειωθεί ότι από το Νοέμβρη του 2009 ο επιταχυντής επαναλειτουργεί, ενώ το Μάρτιο του 2010 ολοκληρώθηκαν με επιτυχία οι πρώτες συγκρούσεις σωματιδίων.

O Γάλλος φωτογράφος JR είναι ο ιδιοκτήτης της μεγαλύτερης γκαλερί τέχνης στον κόσμο. Τα έργα του δεν τα εκθέτει σε μουσεία, αλλά εκεί όπου μπορούν όλοι να τα δουν: στους δρόμους. Ο τολμηρός φωτογράφος, ο οποίος έχει επιλέξει την ανωνυμία, μιλά μέσα από τις φωτογραφίες του για την αφοσίωση, την ελευθερία, την ταυτότητα και τα όρια, ενώ είναι ο νικητής του TED Prize για το 2011.

Η έμπνευσή του προήλθε όταν βρήκε μια φωτογραφική μηχανή στο μετρό του Παρισιού. Από τότε, ξεκίνησε να ασχολείται με την ευρωπαϊκή τέχνη του δρόμου, εντοπίζοντας ανθρώπους, οι οποίοι επικοινωνούσαν τα μηνύματά τους μέσα από τους τοίχους της πόλης. Έπειτα, συνέχισε την εξερεύνησή του πάνω στα όρια, παρατηρώντας ανθρώπους σε ξεχασμένες υπόγειες γωνιές ή από τις στέγες του Παρισιού.

Το 2006, κατάφερε να ολοκληρώσει την παράτολμη και παράνομη έκθεση «Πορτραίτο μιας γενιάς» («Portrait of a generation»). Επιχείρησε να φωτογραφήσει «κακοποιούς» των προαστίων και στη συνέχεια διακόσμησε με τις φωτογραφίες τυπώμενες σε τεράστιες διαστάσεις τις αστικές περιοχές του Παρισιού. Η παράνομη πράξη του έλαβε θεσμική αναγνώριση, όταν το Δημαρχείο της Πόλης του Παρισιού επέλεξε να προβάλει τα πορτραίτα στην πρόσοψή του.
Ο JR δε σταμάτησε όμως εκεί. Το 2007 πραγματοποίησε σε συνεργασία με τον φωτογράφο Marco, τη μεγαλύτερη παράνομη έκθεση που έχει γίνει ποτέ και η οποία είχε τίτλο «Πρόσωπο με Πρόσωπο» («Face 2 Face»). Ο JR δημοσίευσε τεράστια πορτραίτα Ισραηλινών και Παλαιστινίων σε οκτώ παλαιστινιακές και ισραηλινές πόλεις, και στις δύο μεριές του Τείχους του Αίσχους στη Δυτική Όχθη.
Μετά το Παρίσι και την Μέση Ανατολή, επέκτεινε την τέχνη του και το πάθος για τη φωτογραφία, στην Αφρική, όπου «διακόσμησε» ακόμη και ερειπωμένες γέφυρες με πορτραίτα αφρικανών γυναικών, καθώς και στη Βραζιλία, όπου «στόλισε» παλιά τρένα και τις στέγες στις φαβέλες με τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε οι φωτογραφίες να προστατεύουν τα μικρά χαμόσπιτα από τη βροχή.

Για το έτος 2011, ανακηρύχθηκε ο νικητής του βραβείου Ted, παίρνοντας τη σκυτάλη από τον περσινό νικητή και πολύ γνωστό σεφ, Jamie Oliver. Το βραβείο Ted, το οποίο πήρε το όνομά του από τις λέξεις Τεχνολογία, Διασκέδαση και Σχέδιο (Technology, Entertainment, Design) επιβραβεύει κάθε χρόνο τα άτομα εκείνα που με το έργο τους επιχειρούν να αλλάξουν τον κόσμο μέσα από μια επιθυμία τους («One Wish to Change the World»). Το βραβείο για το νικητή αντιστοιχεί σε 100.000 δολάρια.
Ο JR, σε αντίθεση με τον προκάτοχό του, δεν επικεντρώθηκε στο φαγητό, αλλά στη δύναμη της εικόνας. Δεν πιστεύει πως θα αλλάξει τον κόσμο, όπως δηλώνει, αλλά μερικές φορές «ένα και μόνο χαμόγελο σε ένα απρόσμενο μέρος, μπορεί να σε κάνει να ονειρεύεσαι ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να γίνει».

Τι είναι η αναδίπλωση των πρωτεϊνών και πώς αυτή συνδέεται με τις ασθένειες;
Οι πρωτεΐνες είναι η κινητήρια δύναμη της βιολογίας -- οι «νανομηχανές» της. Πριν οι πρωτεΐνες μπορέσουν να πραγματοποιήσουν αυτές τις σημαντικές λειτουργίες, αυτοδιαμορφώνουν την τρισδιάστατη δομή τους, ή «αναδιπλώνονται». Η διαδικασία της αναδίπλωσης των πρωτεϊνών, παρότι είναι ζωτική και θεμελιώδης ουσιαστικά για όλη τη βιολογία, παραμένει από πολλές πλευρές ένα μυστήριο.
